I regard De La Catessen as one of the most important and exciting music/art venues to grace the humble city of Adelaide. So it was to my shock and sadness to learn that it has closed after four years with local composer Luke Altmann at the helm. In its first year the small confines of the Deli operated as a gallery space and occasional music venue for solo artists and small ensembles. By 2006 it had begun to lean towards the role of a music venue, whilst also hosting the Lee Marvin poetry reading nights. It was during 2006 and 2007 that Luke afforded me the opportunity to stage the Tyndall Assembly experimental music series, which showcased a variety of local artists and the performance of important historic works. The De La Catessen finished on a high note during April 2009 as Luke curated the wonderful Adelaide Festival of Unpopular Music which myself and several other local/interstate artists had the honour of performing at.
I offer my sincere thanks and gratitude to Luke Altmann for maintaining this venue over the past four years, and wish him all the best for his future pursuits. The Deli will be sorely missed.
